Joao Pessoa – Itinerary

João Pessoa Itinerary: 4 Days in João Pessoa

João Pessoa Itinerary: 4 Days

Four days in João Pessoa gives you enough time to cover the city properly, catch the Jacaré sunset, visit the historic center, and do both major southern beach day trips without rushing. This itinerary runs in a logical order — city first, beaches second.

João Pessoa from above — a compact city where four days covers the highlights without feeling rushed.

4-Day Overview

01 City & Historic Center Tambaú beach morning → Mercado de Artesanato → Igreja de São Francisco → Praça Antenor Navarro dinner
02 Cabo Branco & Jacaré Cabo Branco cliff walk → Niemeyer lighthouse → beach swim → Jacaré sunset → river boat

💡 Tide timingCheck the tide schedule before Day 3. Coqueirinho’s reef pools are only accessible at low tide — they’re the main reason to go. Plan your arrival for about 1 hour before low tide.

Day 1 — City and Historic Center

Igreja de São Francisco João Pessoa Brazil azulejo tiles historic center

Igreja de São Francisco — the highlight of the historic center, with an interior covered in over 37,000 hand-painted azulejo tiles.

8:00 AM

Tambaú beach morning

Start with a swim at Tambaú before the wind picks up. The beach is calmest in the morning. If your visit falls on a Sunday, the craft fair starts early — arrive before 9am for the best selection.

10:00 AM

Mercado de Artesanato da Paraíba

Head to the craft market in the city center — leather goods, ceramics, Paraíba lace, regional cachaça. Good for a cheap breakfast from the food stalls on the ground floor. Prices here are lower than the beach stalls.

11:30 AM

Igreja de São Francisco

The interior covered in 37,000 hand-painted azulejo tiles is one of the most extraordinary baroque spaces in Brazil. Arrive before noon to beat the tour groups. Allow 45–60 minutes for the church and convent courtyard.

1:00 PM

Lunch at Praça Antenor Navarro

The square next to the historic churches has several restaurants with outdoor seating. Good for a proper sit-down lunch in the shade before the afternoon heat peaks.

3:00 PM

Explore Tambaú waterfront

Return to the beachfront area for the afternoon. Walk the boardwalk, try the local juice bars along the strip, and explore the craft stalls. The area is most active in the late afternoon.

7:00 PM

Dinner in Manaíra

Uber to Manaíra for dinner — the best independent restaurants in João Pessoa are concentrated along Avenida Epitácio Pessoa. Fresh seafood at prices well below what you’d pay in Recife or Rio.

Day 2 — Cabo Branco and Jacaré Sunset

Tambaú beach João Pessoa Brazil morning calm water

Day 2 starts at the Tambaú waterfront before heading south to Cabo Branco and the Niemeyer lighthouse.

8:30 AM

Cabo Branco cliff walk

Uber to Cabo Branco. Walk the cliff path between Praia do Cabo Branco and Praia de Seixas — about 30–40 minutes each way. Views over the Atlantic and the lighthouse. Best in the morning before the heat.

10:00 AM

Niemeyer lighthouse

Visit the Farol do Cabo Branco — the Oscar Niemeyer-designed lighthouse on the cliff edge. The building itself is worth seeing up close. This is technically the easternmost point of the Americas.

11:00 AM

Cabo Branco beach swim

The beach below the cliffs is calmer and less crowded than Tambaú. Good for a proper swim before the afternoon wind picks up. A few barracas here for drinks and snacks.

1:00 PM

Lunch in Tambaú

Return to the Tambaú area for lunch. Rest in the afternoon — Day 2 ends late with the Jacaré sunset.

4:30 PM

Uber to Jacaré

About 15km north of Tambaú — 20 minutes by Uber. Arrive 30–40 minutes before sunset for a good spot on the bank. The saxophonist starts playing as the sun gets low.

6:00 PM

Jacaré sunset and boat trip

Watch the sunset from the riverbank. Take the short boat trip out on the water (R$15–20) for a better view. Stay for the vendor stalls and the atmosphere after sunset.

7:30 PM

Return by Uber

Book your Uber before leaving Jacaré — the area is isolated after the crowd disperses and supply drops. Dinner back in Tambaú or Manaíra.

Day 3 — Coqueirinho

Praia de Coqueirinho Paraíba Brazil natural reef pools beach cliffs

Praia de Coqueirinho — time your arrival for about 1 hour before low tide for the best reef pool access.

8:00 AM

Early departure for Coqueirinho

About 40km south — 50 minutes by organized tour or car. Check low tide time the night before and plan your departure accordingly. Arriving 1 hour before low tide gives you the best access to the reef pools.

9:30 AM

Reef pools at low tide

The natural pools formed by the offshore reef are the main reason people make the trip. Warm, clear, and completely calm. Bring snorkeling gear if you have it — the reef has fish. Stay in the pools as long as the tide allows.

12:30 PM

Lunch at the beach barraca

Simple barracas near the beach serve fresh grilled fish and seafood. Cheap and good — prices are significantly lower than Tambaú restaurants.

2:00 PM

Beach and cliffs

After lunch, explore the red cliffs at the northern end of the beach. The elevated view over the coastline is worth the short climb. Swim in the open ocean section if the water is calm.

4:00 PM

Return to João Pessoa

Back in João Pessoa by late afternoon. Rest evening — Day 4 also starts early.

The easiest way to do Day 3 is the northern coast beaches tour on GetYourGuide — transport from João Pessoa, the reef pools timed for low tide, and a local guide included.

Day 4 — Tambaba and Departure

Praia de Tambaba Paraíba Brazil red cliffs double beach

Praia de Tambaba — dramatic red cliffs separate the two sections of this double beach, 50km south of João Pessoa.

8:00 AM

Departure for Tambaba

About 50km south — 1 hour by car. Best done with a rental car or organized transfer. Tambaba can be combined with a second visit to Coqueirinho if you want a longer beach day.

9:30 AM

Tambaba cliffs and beach

The red cliffs separating the two beach sections are the visual highlight. Climb to the top for the views over the coastline. The non-naturist section has a few barracas and is completely accessible.

12:00 PM

Return to João Pessoa

Back by early afternoon. Last lunch in Manaíra before heading to the airport.

2:30 PM

Airport departure

About 12km from Tambaú — 25–35 minutes by Uber. Allow extra time during afternoon traffic hours.

Practical Notes

  • Check low tide times before Day 3 — Coqueirinho’s reef pools only work properly at low tide. The whole point of the trip changes depending on timing.
  • For the Jacaré sunset, check weather conditions — cloudy western skies cancel the experience. The dry season (September to February) gives the most reliable clear evenings.
  • The southern beaches (Coqueirinho, Tambaba) require organized transport. Public buses don’t reach them directly.
  • Book your Uber from Jacaré before leaving — supply drops significantly after the crowd disperses at sunset.
  • If you’re continuing to Recife after João Pessoa, there are frequent direct buses (about 90 minutes) from the João Pessoa bus terminal — no need to fly.
