Lençóis Maranhenses is a national park in the state of Maranhão, northeastern Brazil. The name means “Maranhão Bedsheets” — from above, the white dunes look like linen spread across the landscape. The park covers about 1,500 square kilometers along the Atlantic coast, about 270km east of São Luís.

What makes it unusual is the combination of dunes and freshwater. Barreirinhas is the right base for most visitors. It has hotels at every price point, restaurants, an ATM, and all tour operators. All jeep circuits and boat tours depart from here. Most visitors spend 2–3 nights.

Atins is a small fishing village at the western edge of the park with sand streets, no cars, and direct walking access into the dunes. No ATM, very limited food options. Worth at least one night if you want the immersive experience without a jeep.

Santo Amaro do Maranhão is on the western side — cheaper and less visited than Barreirinhas, but with significantly less infrastructure. Works as a transit point or for budget travelers approaching from the west.
