Natal Itinerary — 3, 5 & 7 Days in Rio Grande do Norte
Three days in Natal covers Ponta Negra and the Genipabu dunes. Five days adds Maracajaú reef snorkeling and a Pipa day trip. Seven days lets you overnight in Pipa and visit Pirangi do Norte at a proper pace. This guide gives you a day-by-day plan for each option.
Morro do Careca — the 120-meter dune at the southern end of Ponta Negra beach, the iconic backdrop of any Natal itinerary and best seen at golden hour from the beach.
3-Day Natal Itinerary
Three days is enough for the city essentials — Ponta Negra beach, the Forte dos Reis Magos, and a Genipabu dune buggy tour. No day trips south.
Day 1 — Ponta Negra beach, the starting point for any Natal itinerary. Settle in, swim, and spend the afternoon at the Forte before returning for sunset at the Morro do Careca.
Arrive & check in
Check into your hotel in Ponta Negra. Walk to the beach, get your bearings, and find a spot in the central section for a swim. Breakfast at one of the beachfront kiosks — fresh coconut water and tapioca to start.
Forte dos Reis Magos
Take an Uber to the Forte dos Reis Magos (R$25–35 each way from Ponta Negra). The 1598 Portuguese star fortress takes about 45 minutes to explore — the views from the walls over the river mouth and ocean are the highlight. Visit at low tide for the best conditions and the full view of the coral reef base.
Sunset at Morro do Careca
Return to Ponta Negra and walk to the southern end of the beach. Find a spot on the sand facing the Morro do Careca and wait for the light. At golden hour the dune turns a deep orange that photographs don’t fully capture. The best free experience in Natal.
Dinner in Ponta Negra
Try carne de sol or grilled lobster at one of the restaurants on Rua Erivan França. Early night — the Genipabu tour departs early.
Day 2 — the Genipabu dune complex, 30km north of Natal. The buggy tour through the dunes is the highlight of most Natal itineraries.
Depart for Genipabu
Your buggy tour operator picks you up from your hotel. The drive north takes about 40 minutes. Breakfast before departure or bring snacks — buggy tours run through the morning.
Dune buggy tour
The com emoção option includes steep dune descents, cashew wine at a floating lagoon bar, a stop at Lagoa de Genipabu for swimming, and views over the Atlantic from the dune ridge. The full tour takes 2.5–3 hours. Tell the driver your preference for speed — com emoção is genuinely exciting, sem emoção is calmer. Both are worth doing.
Lunch at Genipabu village
Fresh fish and grilled shrimp at one of the waterfront restaurants in Genipabu village before the return to Natal. Simple, cheap, and good.
Rest afternoon at Ponta Negra
Back at Ponta Negra by early afternoon. Rest, swim, or walk the promenade. The morning tour is physically tiring in the sun — a quiet beach afternoon is the right call.
5-Day Natal Itinerary
Five days is the ideal length — the 3-day core plus Maracajaú reef snorkeling and a Pipa day trip.
Day 3 — Maracajaú, 50km north of Natal. Offshore coral reefs with natural pools, sea turtles, and rays at low tide.
Depart for Maracajaú
Organized tours depart early to catch the low tide window at the reef. The drive north takes about an hour. Bring sunscreen, a waterproof bag, and a rash guard if you have one.
Boat to the reef
A 15-minute boat ride from the Maracajaú waterfront takes you to the reef platform. Spend 1.5–2 hours in the natural pools — snorkeling equipment is provided. The water is waist to chest deep at low tide. Sea turtles are commonly spotted; rays and colorful fish are abundant. Don’t touch the coral.
Lunch & return
Fresh fish lunch at a Maracajaú waterfront restaurant before the return to Natal. Back in Ponta Negra by early afternoon for a rest day at the beach.
Day 4 — Pipa, 85km south of Natal. Spinner dolphins at Baia dos Golfinhos, dramatic cliffs at Praia do Amor, and one of the best beach villages in the Northeast.
Depart for Pipa
Depart early — the dolphins at Baia dos Golfinhos appear most reliably in the morning before 10am. The 85km drive south takes 90 minutes. Go by organized tour with transport included or by rental car.
Baia dos Golfinhos viewpoint
Walk to the clifftop viewpoint above the dolphin bay. Spinner dolphins appear below most mornings — their presence is not guaranteed but consistent enough that most morning visitors see them. Arrive before 10am for the best chances and before the day-tripper crowds build.
Praia do Amor & village
Walk to Praia do Amor — the beach below the red cliffs, one of the most photographed spots in the Northeast. Then explore the Pipa village: good coffee shops, artisan stalls, and the main beach with its bars and watersports.
Lunch & return
Lunch at one of Pipa’s good restaurants — better food options than Natal overall, particularly for seafood. Return to Natal by mid-afternoon. Dinner in Ponta Negra.

Planning Tips
- Check tide tables before planning Genipabu and Maracajaú. Both experiences depend on the tide. Schedule them around the low tide window rather than picking a fixed day first.
- Book buggy tours through your hotel. Ask your hotel to recommend a registered operator. Confirm the total price before departing to avoid add-on charges.
- Depart early for Pipa. The dolphin bay viewpoint is best before 10am. Leaving Natal by 7am puts you in Pipa before the day-tripper coaches arrive.
- September to November is the best window. Dry season conditions, reliable weather for all outdoor activities, and prices below peak season.
- Stay in Ponta Negra. Every day trip in this itinerary departs from Ponta Negra. There is no reason to stay anywhere else.
- If you have 7 days, overnight in Pipa. The day-trip version is fine but the overnight version is significantly better. Book a pousada in Pipa village rather than on the beach for the best restaurant access.
