Lençóis Maranhenses Itinerary: 4 Days

Four days in Lençóis Maranhenses gives you enough time to do the jeep circuit to the main lagoons, the Rio Preguiças boat tour, and at least one night in Atins — the three experiences that together give you the full picture of what the park actually is.

Lençóis Maranhenses from above — four days covers the jeep circuit, the river boat tour, and a night in Atins at a pace that actually lets you absorb the landscape.

4-Day Overview

01 Lagoon Circuit Early jeep tour → Lagoa Azul → Lagoa Bonita → dune walk → Barreirinhas dinner
02 Rio Preguiças Full-day boat tour → Mandacaru lighthouse → Caburé sandbank → river villages
03 Atins Boat to Atins → Lagoa da Gaivota walk → sunset dunes → overnight in village
04 Return Morning walk in Atins → boat back to Barreirinhas → transfer to São Luís
⚠️ Before you arriveWithdraw all the cash you’ll need for the entire trip before leaving São Luís. ATMs in Barreirinhas are unreliable and there are none at all in Atins. Book your jeep tour and Atins accommodation in advance — both fill up in peak season (July–August).

Day 0 — Arriving from São Luís

Barreirinhas Maranhão Brazil river town arrival Lençóis Maranhenses

Barreirinhas on the Rio Preguiças — the base town for Lençóis Maranhenses, where you’ll spend your first night and organize the jeep and boat tours.

Morning

Fly into São Luís

Most visitors connect through São Paulo (GRU) or Fortaleza (FOR). São Luís airport code is SLZ. Plan to land by midday at the latest to allow enough time for the transfer to Barreirinhas before dark.

Afternoon

Transfer to Barreirinhas

About 270km — 3 to 4 hours by road. Shared transfer (fretado) from São Luís costs R$80–120 per person and departs from fixed points in the city. Private transfer costs R$500–700 for the whole vehicle and is more comfortable. Book in advance — availability is limited and last-minute options are scarce.

Evening

Check in and book tours

Arrive in Barreirinhas in the early evening. Check in to your pousada and immediately book your jeep tour for the next morning and your boat tour for Day 2. If you haven’t already done this online, the tour operators on the main street stay open into the evening. Eat at one of the restaurants on the waterfront — fresh river fish is the regional specialty.

Day 1 — Jeep Circuit to the Lagoons

Lagoa Azul Lençóis Maranhenses Brazil blue lagoon white dunes jeep circuit day 1

Lagoa Azul — the most visited lagoon in the park, reached by 4×4 across the dune field from Barreirinhas, best seen before 9am when the light is low and the crowds haven’t arrived.

6:30 AM

Early departure by jeep

The jeep departs early to reach the lagoons before the heat and the other tour groups. There are no paved roads inside the park — the driver navigates sand tracks that change position every rainy season. The ride is rough, slow, and genuinely impressive once the dunes open up around you.

8:00 AM

Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita

The two main lagoons are reached after a 30–45 minute walk across the dunes from where the jeep stops. The sand is soft and the sun is already hot even at this hour. The walk is straightforward with the guide — don’t attempt it without one. Swimming in the lagoons is the main activity. The water is clear, freshwater, and warm from the heated sand. Depth varies — some sections are knee-deep, others several meters.

11:00 AM

Return to Barreirinhas

Back at the jeep and returning by mid-morning. Lunch at a restaurant in Barreirinhas — the morning was physical and you’ll be hungry. Rest in the afternoon — the heat in Barreirinhas between noon and 3pm is intense and the following days are full.

Evening

Sunset on the Rio Preguiças waterfront

The Barreirinhas waterfront is pleasant in the late afternoon when the heat drops. The river turns orange at sunset. A good evening to eat well and sleep early before the full-day boat tour tomorrow.

Book your jeep circuit in advance through GetYourGuide — early morning departure with a local driver who knows the current dune routes and times the lagoon visit for the best light.

Day 2 — Rio Preguiças Boat Tour

Rio Preguiças Lençóis Maranhenses Brazil boat tour river mangroves villages

The Rio Preguiças from the boat — a slow river that widens as it approaches the coast, passing through mangroves, fishing villages, and the Caburé sandbank where the river meets the ocean.

8:00 AM

Depart from Barreirinhas dock

The boat leaves from the Barreirinhas waterfront. The Rio Preguiças is wide and slow — the boat ride down to the coast takes about 2 hours each way. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and water — there’s no shade on most river boats and the sun is direct for the entire journey.

10:00 AM

Farol de Mandacaru

The boat stops at the village of Mandacaru, where the lighthouse sits on a low hill. Climbing the 196 steps takes about 10 minutes and gives you the best elevated view of the dune field and the river delta available anywhere in the region. The village below is small and worth a short walk before reboarding.

11:30 AM

Caburé sandbank

Where the Rio Preguiças meets the Atlantic — a narrow strip of sand between the river and the ocean. You can swim in the river on one side and the ocean on the other from the same stretch of sand. Lunch is usually served here by the boat operator or at one of the small restaurants on the sandbank.

2:00 PM

Return upriver to Barreirinhas

The return trip takes the same route upstream. Arrive back in Barreirinhas by late afternoon. Dinner at the waterfront and an early night — tomorrow is the Atins transfer.

The Rio Preguiças boat tour can be booked through GetYourGuide — full-day circuit from Barreirinhas with the lighthouse and Caburé sandbank stops included.

Rio Preguiças Full-Day Boat Tour

  • ✔ Full-day river circuit from Barreirinhas
  • ✔ Mandacaru lighthouse and Caburé sandbank
  • ✔ River meets ocean swimming stop
  • ✔ Free cancellation

Day 3 — Atins and the Dune Walks

Atins Lençóis Maranhenses Brazil village dunes sunset lagoon walk

Atins at sunset — the western village gives you direct walking access into the dune field and a completely different experience of the park from the jeep tours out of Barreirinhas.

Morning

Boat from Barreirinhas to Atins

The boat from Barreirinhas to Atins travels along the Rio Preguiças and takes 3–4 hours. Departures are limited — check the schedule with your pousada the evening before and confirm your seat. Arrive in Atins by early afternoon. Check in to your pousada and have lunch — options are limited so eat at the pousada if that’s offered.

3:00 PM

Lagoa da Gaivota with a local guide

From Atins you can walk directly into the dune field — no jeep needed. Lagoa da Gaivota is about 45 minutes on foot with a local guide. The walk crosses open dunes with no shade and can be disorienting — go with a guide and carry 2 liters of water minimum. The lagoon is large, calm, and significantly less visited than Lagoa Azul.

Sunset

Sunset from the dune above Atins

There’s a dune directly above the village where locals and visitors gather at sunset. The sun drops into the dune field to the west — no ocean horizon, just an endless white landscape turning orange and pink. One of the better sunsets in the Northeast, and entirely free.

Evening

Overnight in Atins

Dinner at your pousada or one of the two or three restaurants in the village. Atins is very quiet at night — no bars, no nightlife. The stars are exceptional with no light pollution. Sleep early.

Day 4 — Return to São Luís

Lagoa da Gaivota Atins Lençóis Maranhenses Brazil morning lagoon walk last day

Lagoa da Gaivota in the morning — the last chance for a dune walk before the boat back to Barreirinhas and the transfer to São Luís.

Early morning

Optional second dune walk

If the boat to Barreirinhas doesn’t leave until mid-morning, a short early walk into the dunes from Atins is the best way to use the time. The morning light on white dunes is worth getting up for — completely different from the midday glare. Bring water and stay close to the village edge.

Mid-morning

Boat back to Barreirinhas

The return boat to Barreirinhas takes 3–4 hours. Arrive by early afternoon. Pick up any luggage left at your Barreirinhas pousada and head to the transfer point.

Afternoon

Transfer to São Luís

The drive back to São Luís takes 3–4 hours. Plan your flight home for the following morning if possible — arriving in São Luís in the evening and flying out the same night is tight. A night in São Luís gives you a buffer and the chance to explore the historic center, one of the best-preserved colonial town centers in Brazil.

Practical Notes

  • Withdraw all cash in São Luís before the transfer to Barreirinhas. ATMs in Barreirinhas are unreliable and there are none in Atins.
  • Book the jeep tour, boat tour, and Atins accommodation before you arrive — all three fill up fast in peak season (July–August).
  • Bring SPF 50+ and reapply every 90 minutes in the dunes. The reflected UV from white sand is significantly stronger than a regular beach.
  • Carry at least 2 liters of water per person for any dune walk. 3 liters if going beyond the immediate edge of the park.
  • The road from São Luís to Barreirinhas can be slow in the rainy season (March–May) — allow extra time if traveling in this period.
  • If you only have 2 days, skip Atins and do the jeep circuit on Day 1 and the boat tour on Day 2. Both are based in Barreirinhas.
  • Visit between May and September for the fullest lagoons. Outside this window water levels drop progressively.
  • Shoes or sandals for the dune walks — the sand at midday is hot enough to burn bare feet between 11am and 3pm.
