Lençóis Maranhenses Travel Guide
White sand dunes filled with hundreds of freshwater lagoons after the rains — one of the most unusual landscapes in South America and unlike anywhere else in Brazil.
Lençóis Maranhenses from above — 1,500 square kilometers of white dunes interrupted by hundreds of freshwater lagoons that form between January and June after the rainy season.
About Lençóis Maranhenses
Lençóis Maranhenses is a national park in the state of Maranhão, northeastern Brazil. The name means “Maranhão Bedsheets” — from above, the white dunes look like linen spread across the landscape. The park covers about 1,500 square kilometers along the Atlantic coast, about 270km east of São Luís.
What makes it unusual is the combination of dunes and freshwater. The dunes form from sand carried by wind from the coast, and after the rainy season they fill with hundreds of lagoons — freshwater pools that vary from ankle-deep to several meters, ranging in color from pale green to deep blue depending on depth and sky. By the dry season most have evaporated, and the cycle starts again.
Getting there takes effort — a flight to São Luís and a 3–4 hour overland transfer to Barreirinhas. Most visitors spend 3–4 days, combining a jeep circuit to the main lagoons with a boat tour along the Rio Preguiças and at least one night in Atins, the small village at the western edge of the park.
Why Visit Lençóis Maranhenses
Top Things to Do
Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita
The two main lagoons deep inside the dune field — reached by 4×4 from Barreirinhas plus a 30-minute walk across the dunes. Arrive before 9am for the best light and fewer tour groups.
Farol de Mandacaru
A working lighthouse in the village of Mandacaru, reached by boat along the Rio Preguiças. The 196-step climb gives you the best elevated view over the river delta and dune field available in the region.
Lagoa da Gaivota from Atins
One of the larger lagoons in the western park, accessible on foot from Atins in about 45 minutes with a guide. Best at sunset when the water reflects the sky and the surrounding dunes turn golden.
4×4 jeep circuit
The only way to reach the interior lagoons from Barreirinhas — across sand tracks that shift position every rainy season. The ride through open dunes with no landmarks is part of the experience.
Rio Preguiças boat tour
A full-day river circuit from Barreirinhas to the coast — mangroves, river villages, the Mandacaru lighthouse, and the Caburé sandbank where the river meets the Atlantic.
Sunset from the dunes
The dune above Atins draws visitors every evening for sunset — the sun drops into the dune field to the west with no ocean horizon, just an endless white landscape turning orange. Free and genuinely good.
Where to Stay
The choice between Barreirinhas and Atins shapes everything about how you experience the park — they offer genuinely different levels of comfort, access, and immersion.
Barreirinhas is the right base for most visitors. It has hotels at every price point, restaurants, an ATM, and all tour operators. All jeep circuits and boat tours depart from here. Most visitors spend 2–3 nights.
Atins is a small fishing village at the western edge of the park with sand streets, no cars, and direct walking access into the dunes. No ATM, very limited food options. Worth at least one night if you want the immersive experience without a jeep.
Santo Amaro do Maranhão is on the western side — cheaper and less visited than Barreirinhas, but with significantly less infrastructure. Works as a transit point or for budget travelers approaching from the west.
Is Lençóis Maranhenses Safe?
Crime is not a meaningful concern here. The park is remote and the local population is small. The risks that do exist are environmental — intense sun reflected off white sand, disorientation in the dune field without a guide, and the significant distance from medical services.
Bring SPF 50+ and reapply every 90 minutes. Carry at least 2–3 liters of water per person for any dune walk. Never enter the interior dunes without a local guide who knows the current season’s routes — the terrain has no fixed landmarks and changes every rainy season.

QAre the lagoons always there?
No — the lagoons are seasonal. They form after the rainy season (January to June) and evaporate during the dry season. Visit between May and September for reliable full lagoon conditions. By November most interior lagoons are dry.
QHow do I get to Lençóis Maranhenses?
Fly into São Luís (SLZ), then take a shared transfer or private vehicle to Barreirinhas — about 270km, 3–4 hours. Shared transfers cost R$80–120 per person. Private transfers cost R$500–700 for the whole vehicle.
QDo I need a guide inside the park?
Yes, for the interior dunes. The dune field has no fixed landmarks and the tracks change every rainy season. Local drivers for the jeep circuit and guides for walks from Atins know the current routes — independent navigation in the park interior is genuinely dangerous.
QHow many days do I need?
Three to four days covers the main experiences — the jeep circuit to Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita, the Rio Preguiças full-day boat tour, and a night in Atins. Two days is the minimum for just Barreirinhas-based tours.
Final Tips for Lençóis Maranhenses
- Visit between May and September — this is when the lagoons are full and the weather is dry. Outside this window the lagoons shrink or disappear entirely.
- Withdraw all your cash in São Luís before the transfer. ATMs in Barreirinhas are unreliable and there are none in Atins.
- Book your jeep tour, boat tour, and Atins accommodation before you arrive — all fill up in July and August.
- Bring SPF 50+ and reapply every 90 minutes. White sand reflects UV at a significantly higher intensity than a regular beach.
- Carry at least 2–3 liters of water per person for any dune walk. There are no water sources inside the park.
- Never enter the interior dunes without a guide. The terrain is disorienting and the tracks change every season.
- Wear sandals or shoes on the dunes between 11am and 3pm — the sand temperature at midday can burn bare feet.
- Add at least one night in Atins — it gives you a completely different perspective on the park and direct access to the dunes on foot.
For the jeep circuit to Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita, the most reliable booking option is through GetYourGuide — local driver, early morning departure, and the logistics of the dune field handled by someone who knows the current season’s routes.
