Reaching Lençóis Maranhenses requires flying into São Luís and then a 4-hour overland transfer — the most significant single cost of the trip for most visitors.

Getting to Lençóis Maranhenses is the biggest cost item for most visitors. The park is remote — Barreirinhas is about 270km from São Luís, the nearest major airport, and there’s no fast or cheap way to cover that distance.

Flight to São Luís

Most visitors fly into São Luís Marechal Cunha Machado International Airport (SLZ). Domestic connections from São Paulo, Fortaleza, and Recife are the most common routes. International visitors usually connect via São Paulo (GRU or CGH) or Fortaleza (FOR). Flights from São Paulo run $80–180 USD one way depending on timing and airline.

São Luís to Barreirinhas

About 270km — three to four hours depending on the road condition in the rainy season. Options:

Shared transfer (fretado) — R$80–120 per person (~$16–24 USD). Departs from specific points in São Luís on scheduled times. Cheapest but slowest and least flexible.
Private transfer — R$500–700 for the whole car (~$100–140 USD). Split between 4 people it’s competitive with the shared transfer. More comfortable and faster.
Rental car — from R$120–180/day at São Luís airport. Makes sense if you want full flexibility for the days around the park. The road to Barreirinhas is paved but gets rough in the rainy season.

Inside the park — food and drink stops are nonexistent in the dune field. Bring everything you need for the day from Barreirinhas or Atins before heading out.

In Barreirinhas

Barreirinhas has a decent range of restaurants concentrated on the main street and waterfront. A prato feito (plate of the day) at a local restaurant costs R$25–40 (~$5–8 USD). Sit-down dinner at a tourist restaurant runs R$45–80 (~$9–16 USD) per main course. Seafood — river fish, crab, shrimp — is the regional specialty and well priced compared to coastal cities.

In Atins

Food options in Atins are very limited. A handful of small restaurants and pousadas serve meals — usually at fixed times and with limited menu choices. Most travelers staying in Atins eat at their pousada. Expect to pay R$35–60 per meal (~$7–12 USD) for whatever’s available.

In the park

There are no food or drink stops inside the dune field or at the lagoons. Bring water, snacks, and sunscreen from your base — this is not optional. The sun and physical exertion of walking in the dunes means you’ll need more than you think.
