The main gateway town for Lençóis Maranhenses — sitting on the Rio Preguiças with hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and an ATM. All jeep tours into the park depart from here, and all boat tours along the Rio Preguiças start at the town dock.
Barreirinhas is not a pretty town — it’s a functional base, and that’s exactly what it needs to be. The main street has tour operators, restaurants, and a handful of good pousadas. Most visitors spend 2–3 nights in Barreirinhas and do their jeep and boat tours from here. The jeep circuit to Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita takes half a day. The Rio Preguiças boat tour takes a full day. Add an afternoon at leisure and you’ve covered the main experiences.

Atins — For a Different Experience
A small fishing village at the western end of the park with sand streets, small pousadas, and direct walking access into the dune field. No cars, no ATM, very limited restaurants. The most immersive way to experience the park — and the most logistically demanding.
Atins sits at the western edge of the park — accessible by boat from Barreirinhas along the Rio Preguiças (about 3–4 hours) or via a long sand track from the west. It has sand streets, no paved roads, and a handful of pousadas ranging from very basic to genuinely comfortable.
The main advantage over Barreirinhas is direct access. From Atins you can walk into the dune field without a 4×4 — the lagoons closest to the village are reachable on foot with a guide. Lagoa da Gaivota is about 45 minutes on foot. The pace is completely different from Barreirinhas.
The tradeoff is logistics. There’s no ATM, very limited food options, and if something goes wrong medically, getting help takes significantly longer than from Barreirinhas. Bring all the cash you need before arriving, and enough medication and supplies to be self-sufficient for your stay.

It’s a small town with very basic infrastructure — a handful of pousadas, limited restaurants, and no ATM. From here you can access the western sections of the park that are less visited than the lagoons around Barreirinhas.
Most international travelers don’t base themselves here — the infrastructure gap compared to Barreirinhas is significant and the tour options are more limited. It makes most sense as a transit point or for budget travelers who have already seen the eastern sections of the park from Barreirinhas.
