Where to Stay in Florianópolis, Brazil

Lagoa da Conceição is the best base for most visitors to Florianópolis. It sits at the geographic center of the island, which means you can reach the north coast beaches, the east coast surf spots, and the south coast trails all without extreme drives. In summer traffic terms, this is significant.

The neighborhood has the island’s best concentration of restaurants, bars, and independent accommodation — pousadas, boutique hotels, Airbnb apartments — at a range of price points. The lagoon itself is beautiful and the village atmosphere is relaxed without being dead after 9pm.

Praia Mole and Joaquina are about 10 minutes away by car. Barra da Lagoa is 15 minutes. The north coast adds 20–30 minutes but is manageable as a day trip. The south — Lagoinha do Leste, Armação, Campeche — is 20–30 minutes in the other direction.

Jurerê Internacional is the most upscale area on the island. It has the best hotels and resorts in Florianópolis, a calm sheltered beach ideal for children, and a strip of beach clubs and restaurants that are expensive by Brazilian standards and would be considered good value by European or North American ones.

The trade-off is location. Jurerê is in the far north — about 35 minutes from Lagoa da Conceição and 45 minutes from the south coast in normal traffic. In peak summer that can double. If you stay here, you’re essentially committing to the north coast for most of your trip. For families who want a calm beach, good facilities, and don’t plan to drive across the island every day, that’s completely fine. For active travelers who want to explore, it adds up.

The adjacent Jurerê Tradicional — the older, less commercial neighborhood immediately west — has a similar beach with lower prices and a more local atmosphere. Worth considering if you want the location without the beach club prices.

The south coast of the island has a completely different character from the north. The beaches are wilder, the development is lower, and the neighborhoods — Campeche, Armação, Pântano do Sul — feel more like genuine communities than resort strips. Prices are lower, the pace is slower, and the proximity to Lagoinha do Leste and Ilha do Campeche makes it the best base for nature-focused travelers.

Campeche is the most developed of the three — a long beach with a residential neighborhood behind it and a solid selection of pousadas and rental houses. Armação is smaller and quieter, with access to both Lagoinha do Leste by boat and the Campeche island trips. Pântano do Sul is the most remote, at the southern tip of the island, and is the trailhead for the Lagoinha do Leste hike.

The downside is distance from Lagoa da Conceição and the north coast. From Pântano do Sul to Jurerê is close to an hour in normal traffic — considerably more in peak summer. If your priority is exploring the whole island, base yourself at Lagoa instead and do the south as day trips.

The downtown area has the cheapest accommodation on the island — hostels, budget hotels, and guesthouses within walking distance of the bus terminal, the Mercado Público, and the Ponte Hercílio Luz. If your priority is keeping costs down and you’re comfortable using public transport, the center is a practical base.

The main limitation: the center has no beach. Getting to the beach neighborhoods requires transport — buses exist but are slow, and rideshares add up over a week. In summer, traffic from downtown to the east coast beaches can be genuinely frustrating.

The center makes more sense as a base for city-focused visits — the historic center, the Mercado Público, day trips by bus — than for a classic Florianópolis beach holiday.
