Best Beaches in João Pessoa, Brazil
João Pessoa sits on the easternmost point of the Americas with warm water year-round and a coastline that mixes convenient city beaches with largely undeveloped stretches to the south. The best beaches here aren’t the ones directly in front of the hotels.
João Pessoa’s coastline — the city beaches are convenient and calm, while the beaches south of the city are among the least developed in the Northeast.
1. Praia de Tambaú
Praia de Tambaú — the main beach in João Pessoa, best visited in the morning before the onshore wind picks up.
Tambaú is the central beach of João Pessoa and where most visitors stay. The water is generally calm and clean, the boardwalk behind the beach has restaurants and craft stalls, and the Sunday fair here is the best in the city for regional handicrafts.
Morning is the best time to swim — by early afternoon the trade wind picks up significantly and makes the beach less comfortable. The sand is wide enough that it never feels packed even on busy weekends.
The beach is safe by Northeast Brazilian standards. Don’t leave bags unattended on the sand, but the level of vigilance needed here is lower than at most beaches in Fortaleza or Recife.
2. Praia do Cabo Branco
Cabo Branco — the beach below the lighthouse at the easternmost point of the Americas, calmer and less crowded than Tambaú.
Cabo Branco is the beach below the lighthouse that marks the easternmost point of the Americas. It’s calmer and less crowded than Tambaú, with cleaner water and a more residential feel — this is where João Pessoa locals swim rather than tourists.
The cliff walk between Cabo Branco and the adjacent Praia de Seixas is worth doing in the early morning — the views over the Atlantic are good and the path follows the cliff edge above the water. Allow about 30–40 minutes for the full walk.
The Oscar Niemeyer-designed lighthouse on the cliff above is open to visitors and worth seeing up close before heading down to the beach.
3. Praia do Jacaré
Praia do Jacaré at sunset — vendors, boats, and a live saxophonist create one of the most distinctive evening experiences in the Northeast.
Jacaré is a riverbank rather than a beach — where the Paraíba River meets the sea, about 15km north of the city. It’s not a swimming destination but an experience: every evening vendors line the bank, small boats take people out on the water, and a saxophonist plays as the sun sets over the estuary.
The sunset here is genuinely good when the sky is clear. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset for a good spot on the bank. The boat trips cost around R$15–20 per person and give you a different view over the water. Stay for the food stalls afterward.

João Pessoa Itinerary →4. Praia de Coqueirinho
Praia de Coqueirinho — natural reef pools, red cliffs, and almost no tourist infrastructure. The standout beach day trip from João Pessoa.
Coqueirinho is the best beach day trip from João Pessoa — largely undeveloped, with red cliffs at one end, natural reef pools at the other, and a wide stretch of sand in between. It’s about 40km south and requires a car or organized tour to reach.
The reef pools are the highlight. At low tide, warm clear water fills the natural basins formed by the offshore reef — calm enough for children, warm from sun exposure, and completely unlike the open ocean beaches near the city. Time your visit around low tide for the best pool access.
Infrastructure here is minimal — a few simple barracas and not much else. Bring water, sunscreen, and cash. The simplicity is the point.
The easiest way to visit is the northern coast beaches tour on GetYourGuide — transport from João Pessoa, Coqueirinho and surrounding beaches, and a guide who times the visit around low tide for the reef pools.

5. Praia de Tambaba
Praia de Tambaba — dramatic red cliffs separate the two sections of this double beach 50km south of João Pessoa.
Tambaba is a double beach separated by red cliffs — one section open to all visitors, one section designated as Brazil’s first officially recognized naturist beach. Most visitors come for the scenery. The non-naturist section is completely accessible and has a few barracas.
The red cliffs between the two sections are climbable and give you elevated views over the coastline. The water is clear and open ocean. The beach is significantly less developed than anything near the city — almost no infrastructure, very few people on weekdays.
Best combined with Coqueirinho on the same day — both are south of the city on the same coastal road and fit naturally into a full day trip.
Practical Notes
- Check tide times before visiting Coqueirinho — the reef pools are the main draw and they only fill properly at low tide. A high tide visit misses the point.
- The southern beaches (Coqueirinho, Tambaba) require a car or organized tour. Public transport doesn’t reach them directly.
- Tambaú and Cabo Branco are best in the morning — the afternoon trade wind makes them uncomfortable for swimming and sunbathing.
- The Jacaré sunset works best on clear evenings with low cloud cover to the west. Check the weather before making the 20-minute Uber trip.
- Water temperature in João Pessoa stays around 26–28°C year-round — no seasonal variation worth planning around.
