Best Beaches Near São Paulo

São Paulo the city has no beaches of its own, but the state has one of the best coastlines in Brazil within a few hours’ drive. Most paulistanos treat the coast as an extension of weekend life, and visitors can do exactly the same — pick a beach, rent a car or catch a bus, and trade the concrete for the Atlantic forest and the sea.

1. Ilhabela

Ilhabela is an island just off the coast near São Sebastião, reached by a short car ferry. Roughly 85% of the island is protected Atlantic forest, which keeps development limited and the landscape genuinely dramatic — steep, green hills dropping straight into the sea.

The island has dozens of beaches ranging from calm, family-friendly bays close to the ferry terminal to more remote stretches reachable only by boat or trail. Praia do Bonete, accessible by a 6 km hike or boat ride, is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the state, while Praia do Curral and Praia da Feiticeira are easier options for a calmer day.

Ilhabela is also a serious sailing destination — the channel between the island and the mainland hosts regular regattas, and several operators run half-day sailing trips around the coastline.

The Atlantic forest comes right down to many of the beaches here, giving Ubatuba a more natural, less developed feel than other parts of the litoral norte.

Practical Notes

The São Paulo coast is best reached by car. Buses run to most towns but limit your flexibility to explore between beaches.
Weekends and Brazilian summer (December–February) bring heavy traffic on the coastal highways — leave early or travel midweek if possible.
The Rodovia dos Tamoios and Rio-Santos highway are the main routes to the litoral norte; both can back up significantly on holiday weekends.
Most beach towns have a mix of pousadas, hotels, and Airbnb options — book ahead for weekends in peak season.
