Best Beaches Near São Paulo

São Paulo the city has no beaches of its own, but the state has one of the best coastlines in Brazil within a few hours’ drive. Most paulistanos treat the coast as an extension of weekend life, and visitors can do exactly the same — pick a beach, rent a car or catch a bus, and trade the concrete for the Atlantic forest and the sea.

The São Paulo coastline — known locally as the litoral norte and litoral sul — offers some of the best beaches in southeastern Brazil, all within a few hours of the city.

1. Ilhabela

🚗 Access: ~3.5 hrs + ferry 👥 Crowd: High in summer 🌊 Water: Clear, calm bays 🏊 Swimming: Excellent
Ilhabela São Paulo Brazil island beach Atlantic forest coastline

Ilhabela — an island covered almost entirely in Atlantic forest, with over 40 waterfalls and some of the clearest water on the São Paulo coast.

Ilhabela is an island just off the coast near São Sebastião, reached by a short car ferry. Roughly 85% of the island is protected Atlantic forest, which keeps development limited and the landscape genuinely dramatic — steep, green hills dropping straight into the sea.

The island has dozens of beaches ranging from calm, family-friendly bays close to the ferry terminal to more remote stretches reachable only by boat or trail. Praia do Bonete, accessible by a 6 km hike or boat ride, is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the state, while Praia do Curral and Praia da Feiticeira are easier options for a calmer day.

Ilhabela is also a serious sailing destination — the channel between the island and the mainland hosts regular regattas, and several operators run half-day sailing trips around the coastline.

⚠️ Heads upThe ferry queue to Ilhabela can take hours on summer weekends and holidays. Arrive early on a Friday or travel on a weekday if your schedule allows it.

2. Maresias

🚗 Access: ~3 hrs from São Paulo 👥 Crowd: High, young crowd 🌊 Water: Open ocean, good surf 🏊 Swimming: Moderate
Maresias beach São Paulo Brazil surf coastline litoral norte

Maresias — one of the best-known surf beaches on the São Paulo coast, with a lively bar and restaurant scene that picks up at night.

Maresias is the most famous beach on the litoral norte, known for consistent surf and a young, social atmosphere. The beach itself is long and wide, with decent waves for surfing and bodyboarding, and a strip of beach bars and restaurants that get busy from late afternoon onward.

It’s the kind of beach that works well for a weekend trip rather than a quiet escape — expect crowds, music, and an active nightlife scene, particularly in summer. If you’re after something calmer, the beaches further along the coast (Camburi, Boiçucanga) offer a similar setting with less noise.

💡 TipIf you want to surf at Maresias, several schools rent boards and offer lessons right on the beach. Mornings tend to have calmer conditions and fewer people in the water than the afternoon.

3. Camburi

🚗 Access: ~3 hrs from São Paulo 👥 Crowd: Low to moderate 🌊 Water: Calmer, open ocean 🏊 Swimming: Good
Camburi beach São Paulo Brazil quiet litoral norte family beach

Camburi — a quieter, more relaxed alternative to Maresias, popular with families and known for a laid-back bohemian feel.

Camburi sits just past Maresias on the same stretch of coast and offers a noticeably calmer alternative. The beach is clean, the surrounding village is small, and the overall pace is closer to what people picture when they imagine a low-key Brazilian beach town — without the nightlife intensity of its neighbor.

It’s particularly popular with families and with travelers who want beach time without the crowd. A handful of good juice bars and casual restaurants line the main street, and the beach itself rarely feels overrun even in high season.

ℹ️ Good to knowCamburi and Maresias are close enough to combine in one trip — stay in one and visit the other for a change of pace during the day.

4. Guarujá

🚗 Access: ~1.5 hrs from São Paulo 👥 Crowd: High, urban beach 🌊 Water: Open ocean 🏊 Swimming: Moderate
Guarujá Praia das Pitangueiras São Paulo Brazil urban beach

Praia das Pitangueiras in Guarujá — the closest proper beach to São Paulo city, popular for quick weekend or even day trips.

Guarujá is the closest significant beach destination to São Paulo, making it the default choice for a quick day trip or weekend without committing to a longer drive. Praia das Pitangueiras is the main urban beach, backed by hotels and apartment buildings, while Praia da Enseada further along is longer and slightly less crowded.

The proximity to the city means Guarujá gets busy, especially on weekends and holidays, and the urban backdrop is more developed than the beaches further north. It’s a practical option rather than a scenic highlight, but for travelers with limited time it does the job well.

💡 TipIf your time is limited, Guarujá is the easiest option for a single-day beach trip from São Paulo — the drive is short enough to go and return comfortably in one day.

5. Ubatuba

🚗 Access: ~3.5 hrs from São Paulo 👥 Crowd: Moderate 🌊 Water: Clear, varied conditions 🏊 Swimming: Excellent
Ubatuba São Paulo Brazil islands Atlantic forest beach coastline

Ubatuba — famous for having over 100 beaches along its coastline, ranging from surf spots to calm island-dotted bays.

Ubatuba is known for having more than 100 named beaches along its stretch of coast, ranging dramatically in character — some exposed to ocean swell and good for surfing, others tucked into calm, forested bays dotted with small islands just offshore. It’s the northernmost major beach town on the São Paulo coast and feels noticeably wilder than Guarujá or Maresias.

Boat trips to nearby islands — particularly Ilha das Couves, known for clear water and good snorkeling — are a popular activity, departing from several points along the coast. The Atlantic forest comes right down to many of the beaches here, giving Ubatuba a more natural, less developed feel than other parts of the litoral norte.

ℹ️ Worth knowingWith over 100 beaches to choose from, research a specific one rather than just heading to “Ubatuba” generally — the experience varies enormously between, say, a surf beach and a calm family bay.

Practical Notes

  • The São Paulo coast is best reached by car. Buses run to most towns but limit your flexibility to explore between beaches.
  • Weekends and Brazilian summer (December–February) bring heavy traffic on the coastal highways — leave early or travel midweek if possible.
  • The Rodovia dos Tamoios and Rio-Santos highway are the main routes to the litoral norte; both can back up significantly on holiday weekends.
  • Most beach towns have a mix of pousadas, hotels, and Airbnb options — book ahead for weekends in peak season.
  • A day trip works for Guarujá; the litoral norte (Maresias, Camburi, Ubatuba, Ilhabela) is better suited to an overnight stay given the drive time.
